The
main card of UFN 19 was a cracker with all but one fight going the distance.
On a card littered with former TUF alumni the fans in Oklahoma were
pumped for a big night of excitement and they definitely got their dollars
worth!
Nate Quarry Vs. Tim Credeur
In what was later, and rightfully, given fight of the night honors,
Quarry and Credeur slugged it out for a burning fifteen minutes that
had everything.
Both fighters unleashed right away and were happy to trade on the feet,
with Credeur marginally out striking Quarry who looked to be starting
just a touch slower. Tim caught Nate behind the ear late in the round
with a grazing right hand, sending the veteran down and scrambling to
stay in the fight. “Crazy” latched on and tried to sink in a RNC but
“Rock” stayed calm and worked his way free to end the round.
Round two saw Quarry the main aggressor and he stung Credeur and wound
up in his guard, where he scored plenty of points and took the round,
despite some good movement and sub attempts from Credeur.
The final round saw much of the same, as neither man took a backward
step and they continued to slug it out, till some one got tagged, then
they would belt it out on the ground. Eventually Nate Quarry edged ahead
thanks to his stronger performance on the mat where he controlled things
better than Credeur.
Quarry taking the fight on points, although a rematch at some stage
would not be out of the question, great fight!
Carlos Condit Vs. Jake Ellenberger
Former WEC welterweight champ Condit, was searching for his first victory
inside the octagon. While late replacement Ellenberger wanted to impress
the UFC by causing an upset.
Early on Jake was on course to do so as he was out striking and too
strong for Carlos. The newcomer showed great skills and power with his
hands as he dropped Condit a couple of times and was only a hammer fist
or two away from victory in the opening round.
The second round was a lot more even, after being taken down early,
Condit started to control things a little more and scored some much
needed points. Carlos had to work hard though as Jake gave him nothing
for free.
The final round began and Condit looked to be the fresher man. He controlled
the tempo and positioning well throughout the round and scored maximum
points with a solid ground and pound display. Carlos chalked up his
first win for the UFC thanks to a split decision. Ellenberger will be
back too after a strong display in his debut.
Gray Maynard Vs. Roger Huerta
“The Bully” tries to assert himself early by setting up nicely with
his strikes and controls the octagon. “El Matador” eventually settles
into his own rhythm and fires off some nice straight punches of his
own. He hurts Maynard a little and is throwing more combos than his
opponent, narrowly stealing the first round.
The second round is close again as both fighters struggle for dominance
on the feet. Gray starts to find his mark a lot more, although mainly
with one out punches. Roger looks busier as he is letting go with at
least two or three every time. The points are evenly spread in this
round.
The third round starts with “The Bully” getting a much needed takedown.
He works well from the guard and is frustrating “El Matador”. Huerta
is feeling Maynard’s strength and is struggling to find a way back to
his feet. Maynard slips on a kimura and cranks it hard – Rogers shoulder
starts to resemble a pretzel stick. Somehow his arm doesn’t come off
and he doesn’t tap either. Gray goes on to finish off a dominant round
and secures the points victory on the scorecards.
Nate Diaz Vs. Melvin Guillard
With no lack of lip from these two at the best of times, put them against
each other and you have unlimited sound bites! Diaz intent on bouncing
back from a last start loss and Guillard wanting to establish himself
as a real contender in the lightweight division.
Melvin drops Diaz early on and pounces to finish, sensing that Nate
has recovered somewhat he waves him back to his feet to continue. Diaz
flicks out his jab and continually changes his stance. Guillard lands
some nice shots and sneaks away with the opening round.
Nate pushes the pace in the second round and lifts his tempo as they
continue to exchange on the feet. Melvin sling shots himself off the
fence for a takedown attempt and winds up in a tight guillotine choke
and is forced to tap almost immediately. Diaz claims the victory despite
being on the receiving end for the most part and continues to impress
win, lose or draw.
