UFC 94 RECAP
UFC 94 RECAP by Chad Frost for MMA Sports

The battle of two champions lived up to the massive hype that preceeded it. The judges were kept busy and would have had to sharpen their pencils more than once as there were plenty of close decisions throughout the night. But it was anything but close in the main event between GSP and BJ Penn.

Nate Diaz Vs. Clay Guida
Clay Guida was full of energy as usual and stayed busy enough from start to finish as he managed to out score a somewhat frustrated Diaz. Nate had a distinct reach advantage and every time he got a chance to use it he looked good. Then "The Carpenter" would close the gap, clinch and control position and the tempo of the fight. Clay scored a split decision win and continues on an impressive path in the lightweight division.

Karo Parisyan Vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Parisyan was hoping to get back on track and bring some of that "Heat" that he is known for against Korean hero Kim. In a somewhat lackluster fight which didn't have a great deal of striking action and was primarily a clinch - a - thon, peppered with some nice judo throws, Parysian managed to do enough to persuade the judges to give him the nod via a split decision. The result was a good one for Karo who has had a few health problems recently.

Stephan Bonnar Vs. Jon Jones
TUF veteran Bonnar returned to action for the first time in over a year, against promising new comer Jones. Who in just his second appearance in the UFC, showed a cool head and some cool moves. "Bones" uses spinning kicks and spinning elbows to great effect along with some unusual throwing techniques. Stephan looked a little rusty and you could tell that he had spent some time on the sidelines. Jones had a couple of chances to finish when he rocked "The American Psycho" but was unable to do the deed. All three judges gave Jones the thumbs up and at just 21 years of age he is an exciting prospect.

Lyoto Machida Vs. Thiago Silva
In a battle of the undefeated Brazilians, Machida was elusive as usual. Silva was made to look slow as he pushed the pace and tried to chase down Lyoto, playing right into the karate specialists hands. Thiago got caught and dazed twice as well as taking some hard knees from Machida. The third time was a charm for Lyoto as he flung Silva to the mat in the last seconds of the opening round and lunged in with a big right hand that put Silva top sleep with just one second left on the clock. "The Dragon" moves to 14 - 0 and one step closer to that title shot he has been craving.

Georges St-Pierre Vs. BJ Penn
The main event was a genuine super fight as two champions clashed. "The Prodigy" looking to cement a place in MMA history and "Rush" hell bent on defending his hard earned WW title.
As the bell sounded they both went for the clinch and ended against the fence. Jostling for control and exchanging knees. GSP then looked for the takedown, BJ balanced on one leg and defended. Most of the first round was spent in the clinch trading knees and a few clean jabs landed by both fighters. St Pierre was marginally ahead.

Round two and Georges works for the takedown again and this time he gets it... eventually. From here he cranks up the pace a little and works well from within BJ's guard, always moving, controlling top position and getting plenty of punches and elbows away. Penn throws his legs high in an attempt to get something going via a possible submission but every time St Pierre feels this he postures up, changes position and goes back to work. GSP goes two rounds up.

Round three and now Georges starts to trade a little more, using a stiff jab that hurts BJ's nose. Again Rush asserts his power and takes Penn down again. More of the same from the champ with even more intensity. GSP is now jumping from guard to side control almost at will. BJ is looking bewildered and fatigued, on a couple of occasions Georges gets BJ in a crucifix and goes to work with short elbows and hammer fists that are really causing damage now. A dominant third round and BJ is pretty much spent. St Pierre is growing in confidence every minute.

The fourth round starts and GSP lands several strikes to the head and then body of Penn, before driving him into the canvas again. It is now all GSP as BJ can do little more than survive. Referee Herb Dean warns St Pierre for hitting the back of the head. That is the only problem he encounters as he works over a gallant BJ for the full five minutes. At rounds end The Prodigy is clearly spent and beaten up, moments later the fight is called off as BJ cannot come out for the final round. Georges St Pierre defends his title in emphatic fashion, controlling the pace and location of the fight right from the out set.

The scary thing is I don't think he has even reached his peak as a fighter yet. His next challenge will be Thiago Alves and I'm sure he'll be ready for that one too.
