Penn, St. Pierre, & Silva All Set For Saturday Evening. By Brian O'Hara for MMA Sports

UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn and UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre among others held a workout training session for the media at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. St. Pierre took the win via split decision at the end of their first bout after a spectacular three round battle. The second time around however, both fighters are equally more prepared and devoted for Saturday’s rematch.

“I’m just ready, just ready for this thing. I’m ready to do this,” said Penn.

“I just stick to the things that I do and the things I’m good at. I’m just going to take those techniques and shove them down his thought actually.”

Although Penn has drastically changed his training regiment by cutting out alcohol and his detrimental nightlife habits, he still heads into the fight on the books as an underdog. Playing the role of an unlikely underdog, Penn said he believes that he performs better when he is the one being counted out.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been the underdog. I fight best under pressure. I fight best when I’m supposed to lose.”

Penn said he has stripped down his game plan to the bare essentials since his last experience with St. Pierre and focused on simple techniques that he believes will help give him the edge.

“Georges gets really comfortable if he can get that takedown and control where he wants to fight,” Penn said. “I’m just going to do all the basics you know, everything you see in wrestling. I’ve really been trying to polish up all the basics in my daily wrestling.”

“I’m comfortable on my feet, but you know, I mean sooner or later Georges is going to end up on his back as this fight goes on,” Penn said. “He’s not a guy that ends up on his back too often and that’s when I’m going to start taking advantage.”

Penn said the climb to 175lbs will not effect his performance and his approach is to stay relaxed and try to take St. Pierre’s will to fight out of the equation.

“It’s just me and him. Everybody can be broken and I’m going to attack his central nervous system. I’m going to attack his heart and we’re going to take it from there. As soon as we lock up it’ll feel like we’re the same weight, it always does when I fight with somebody.”

Although Penn has no shortage of confidence, the wise and experienced UFC veteran is not overlooking the UFC welterweight champion.

“I think it’s going to be close. I think I can hit him and hurt him, I think he’s good everywhere. That’s the difference, I know he’s good everywhere. I’m just going to grind this thing out and attack him and beat him. For me I feel like he’s just kind of over looking me saying, ‘I’m better than him in all these areas. I’m bigger, I’m stronger and this is going to be an easy fight,’ and this isn’t the time to do that to me,” Penn stated.

Meanwhile, St. Pierre won their first match by repeatedly taking Penn down and controlling the pace from the top position. This time however, St. Pierre said he will adjust to Penn’s versatile fighting style.

“It’s not going to be about takedowns. We will control the fight and we’ll fight his fight,” St. Pierre said.

“It will be the one who is able to impose his will who will win the fight.”

For St. Pierre, it is not about the UFC gold. It is about defeating the man who poses the biggest threat to his legacy.

“I’m world champion right now, so I don’t fight for the title anymore. My goal for me doing this sport is to be the best fighter ever. That’s my goal and to reach that goal I’ve got to beat the best guy. That’s BJ Penn. In my circle, if somebody can beat me right now it’s BJ Penn.”

“I don’t want to defend my belt. I want to beat BJ Penn. That’s what I want; I want the name.”

St. Pierre may not be overlooking the UFC lightweight champion as much as Penn believes.

“I don’t put myself under any pressure. It would be stupid for me to think that this fight would end quick. BJ is the best guy that I fought. I don’t expect a quick fight. I always expect the worst in a five-five minute round fight at a very, very high pace. So like that, if something happened and I got the win faster than I thought, then I enjoy it.”

As did Penn, St. Pierre has also drastically improved his training methods heading into Saturday’s rematch.

“I’m way more well prepared for this one than I used to be back in the day.”

“When I fought him the first time I was only training with one or two guys. I went there with not really a good game plan. I was just there going to fight you know. I was not as much skilled as I am now.”

The UFC welterweight champion also believes that his fan base will help him mentally for his toughest challenge yet.

“It’s great to give me motivation to do well and I feel like I’m not going alone.”

Also fighting on the card is the undefeated 13-0 Thiago Silva who made it clear that he is prepared for his toughest fight to date against Lyoto Machida who is also unbeaten at 13-0.

“I like to fight. I don’t run away from the fight. If that’s an advantage or not, we’ll have to see. I like to fight. I came to fight.”

With a four fight win streak in the UFC, many believe that Silva is ready for a title shot in the near future.

“I think the title is the objective of any fighter that comes into the UFC. I’ll wait for them and I’ll fight for the title and that’s what I want to do; keep on fighting.”
