When it comes to
retiring, resigning, and returning, Brett Favre does not have anything
on Randy Couture (16-8-0). The UFC Heavyweight Champion ended his 11-month
litigation with the UFC when UFC President, Dana White, announced that
Couture will return to the UFC to face his biggest opponent to date;
literally. Although his opponent, Brock Lesnar (2-1), is still as green
as they get, he still poses a major threat, and the champ may be a little
rusty himself. At 45 years-old, Couture could not afford to lose anymore
time battling it out in the courtroom rather than slugging it out against
his opponents in the octagon. Perhaps White and the UFC knew that they
could drag out the courtroom disparity and leverage Couture back into
the octagon and apparently it worked.
Couture legally disputed with the UFC based on his unsatisfactory contract
and his displeasure with the way the UFC treated him throughout his
career. Upon his resignation from the UFC last October, Couture publicly
stated that his 11-year stay with the organization was surrounded with
an overall lack of respect and appreciation for his efforts. The champion
did what champions do however. He set his personal issues aside on Tuesday
to persevere and give the fans what they want; a title fight between
the only three-time UFC Heavyweight Champion and the most physically
imposing man in the business.
The November bout will be the biggest the heavyweight division has
seen in recent memory and Lesnar seems to have no qualms with being
right in the middle of it. Lesnar said that Couture has something he
wants and he is prepared to necessarily do whatever it takes to take
the gold off of the champ’s waist. Lsenar lost his first bout to former
UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir (11-3-0) at UFC 81, however he recently
smothered Heath Herring (28-14-0) at UFC 87 to get his first UFC win.
This bout may be the first fight in UFC history that features two underdogs;
Lesnar for his undeniable lack of experience and Couture for being the
oldest athlete to grace the octagon, or to defend a title for that matter.
Although he said that he is not overlooking the UFC rookie, Couture
still has his sights on taking it to the former Pride Champion, Fedor
Emelianenko (28-1-0).
There is no certainty if Couture will ever be granted his wish to fight
the number one heavyweight in the business, although his return to the
octagon undoubtedly increases his chances to compete against the Russian
powerhouse. Couture must first find a way to harness the power and agility
of the UFC’s most exciting prospect on November 15, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
