UFC 88 RECAP

After making his name from knocking people out for a living, Chuck Liddell (21-6-0) learned that karma can have a cruel sense of humor when he faced “Sugar” Rashad Evans (12-0-1) Saturday evening UFC 88. Evans, a young man who used to put heavyweights on their backs with a single punch was at one time ridiculed by Ultimate Fighter coach Matt Hughes for being too flashy during his fights. “Sugar” was indeed flashy on Saturday evening at UFC 88 when he stunned the MMA world with a magnificent one-punch knockout over former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. In what took only a round and a half to accomplish, the youthful Evans looked faster, more energized, and sharper than the knockout artist himself. Evans, a former college wrestling standout, left Liddell in a contorted mess on the mat for nearly three minutes after the punch connected, while raising many questions regarding the future of one of the UFC’s all time favorite fighters.

Rich “Ace” Franklin (24-3-0) continued his stay in the winners circle as well, with the surgeon like dissection of Matt Hamill (4-2-0). Franklin clearly had superior stand up skills, while shutting down any attempts at a possible takedown from Hamill. Franklin naturalized Hamill’s wrestling advantage with leg kicks while he continually scored multiple strikes to Hamill’s head. Franklin finally landed a heavy body kick that forced Hamilll to fall to the mat wincing in pain. In other maincard action, Dan Henderson (23-7-0) also rolled over his opponent Rousimar Palhares (8-2-0) at UFC88. Henderson apologized to his fans for not putting the Brazilian away, although he said he was happy that he got the win.
