After a couple of false starts for the main event due to illness and injury the headline act for this event was finally settled - a mouth watering second edition of Tito and Forrest at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Plus some other intriguing fights on a solid card.

Amir Sadollah Vs Phil Baroni
Former TUF winner Sadollah was making a come back of sorts after a long lay off and then a subsequent quick (although controversial) finish in his last fight. Meanwhile “The New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni was making his return to the UFC fold after several years plying his trade elsewhere.

It was Amir who dictated the fight, following a brief early intense flurry from Phil. Sadollah in only his fourth official pro MMA fight, dominated the veteran and bloodied him up nicely thanks to some quality Muay Thai skills. He worked the clinch well and injected timely elbows, but everything was set up with brutal kicks, front kicks, leg kicks and body kicks. Amir Sadollah won comfortably via a points decision.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Vs Luiz Cane
“Little Nog” was making his debut in the UFC, cornered by his twin brother and fellow training partner, Anderson Silva, he wasn’t given any favors by his new bosses, as he faced hard hitting fellow Brazilian Cane.

Just under two minutes into the fight Nogueira had made his mark with some crisp striking and stopped “banha” in his tracks after landing a couple of unanswered punches on his chin. Nogueira by KO in round one.

Paulo Thiago Vs Jacob Volkmann
Thiago didn’t have it all his own way, as a gallant Volkmann, on debut, showed great resistance throughout. Paulo got the points in the first round with some nice stand up and was controlling the fight. He dropped Jacob with a punch in the dying seconds just before the bell.

Round two was much more even with the fight going back and forth. Thiago had the edge standing and on the ground but Volkmann worked hard and landed some nice shots of his own and negated a lot of Thiago’s ground skills, showing a strong guard and some handy moves to get back up regularly. Again in the third Paulo pulled away and claimed the victory via a unanimous points decision, a good fight from start to finish.

Josh Koscheck Vs Anthony Johnson
Two wrestlers who love to strike and can strike hard is easy to watch. Both gave the other plenty of respect early without too much happening. Then they would unload, looking for that fight ending punch. Once Koscheck felt the power of “Rumble” he went for the takedown and was denied. They engaged standing for a while longer, both throwing some nice combinations at times. The opener was fairly even, probably with Johnson narrowly ahead.

Then Josh went back to what he knows best, taking them down and over powering them. He did well, controlling Anthony and dropping some nasty elbows and punches from within the guard. Johnson looked to be fading under the pressure and was eventually submitted via a rear naked choke late in round two.

Forrest Griffin Vs Tito Ortiz
Tito claimed to be injury free and back to 100%. Vowing to make a run at the LHW title again. While Forrest wanted to erase his KO loss to “The Spider” quicker than he ran from the arena that night! It was good to have Tito back, regardless of whether you love him or hate him, the UFC is where he belongs.

The fight was almost a blue print of the first encounter. They traded for a while then Ortiz shot in for the takedown and went to work from above. Griffin eventually got back to his feet and landed the better shots and kicks. Tito takes him down again, pounds on him for a while then he gets up again, this time with a little more damage. Tito takes the points in the first round.

Round two heads in the same direction as the first, with Forrest warming into the fight and getting off some good shots. They’re not heavy but they are doing the job. Tito gets him down again and opens a cut above Griffin’s right eye that just leaks everywhere. Sensing some urgency from the cut he struggles back to his feet and trades some more. The round is much closer and could have gone either way.

The final round starts and Tito, having not fought in a long time has hit the wall. He is moving in slow motion and Forrest proceeds to pick him apart for the entire round, landing quality combinations and stinging leg kicks almost at will. There is no gas left in Tito’s tank and this is what guides Forrest to victory via a split decision.

The stage is now set for a third fight to see just who is superior and that will no doubt have fans excited yet again.
