Charles “Mask”
Lewis, the energetic and eccentric co-founder of the Tapout clothing
line, died in a car crash early morning on Wednesday in Newport Beach,
Calif.
According to the Orange County Coroner’s Office spokesman Jim Amormino,
the car crash occurred around 1 a.m.
Lewis, 45, was not only one of the founders of Tapout, but literally
a walking advertisement for the brand. He distinguished himself with
his camouflage face paint, fun and funky clothes, tattoos, and hats.
Involved in the accident was Lewis’s red Ferrari and a white Porsche.
Lewis was found dead at the scene of the accident according to Lt. Fox,
a member of the Newport Beach Police Department. A female, who is claimed
to be Lewis’s girlfriend, was thrown from the vehicle and is now in
the Western Medical Center and reportedly under stable condition.
An off-duty officer witnessed the final seconds before the crash happened.
Both cars were parallel to each other, facing the same way, going down
Jamboree Road.
The officer that was driving in the opposite direction said he saw
two vehicles out of control, spinning around. His account was that the
red Ferrari hit the curb, crashed into a pole, which tore the car completely
in half.
The off-duty cop said that he watched the white Porsche stop, look
at the accident, then drive away. Shortly after, police found the partly
damaged white Porsche on a side street near the accident. A man and
a woman were seen walking away from the vehicle.
An investigation done by the officers determined that the male was
the driver of the Porsche.
Officials arrested Jeffrey D. Kirby, 51, of Costa Mesa, Calif., and
accounted him for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Kirby’s
bail is set for $1 Million at the Newport Beach Jail, police said. The
woman was charged with public intoxication.
