PETRUZELLI
SLICES THROUGH KIMBO by Brian

Kimbo Slice built his career around a reputation for fighting anyone, anywhere, anytime, which was the case in his bout against Seth Petruzelli at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. Slice’s regularly scheduled opponent Ken Shamrock pulled out after sustaining a last minute cut causing the EliteXC ownership to scramble for a new opponent for Slice. Petruzelli was yanked from the undercard at a moments notice to replace Shamrock. Fighting anyone, anywhere may work in the streets; however as a professional fighter it is wise to know your opponent’s strengths and weaknesses before you engage them. What happened to Slice shows the importance of this golden rule when Slice was knocked out in less time than it takes someone to wash their hands; 14 seconds. “It was a carppy situation for both of us,” Petruzelli said afterwards. Knowing very little about his newly named opponent, Slice entered the cage and charged his opponent as usual. Petruzelli threw a front kick at the massive Slice while backing up against the cage. “I felt like there was a truck coming after me,” said Petruzelli. “I thought, ‘oh crap.” Petruzelli then snapped a right hand that landed on the chin of a crouched Slice who was leading in with his left hand. Stiff from the shot, Slice fell forward to the mat as Petruzelli capitalized with standing strikes from the side to force the ref to stop the bout. “I don’t feel too, too bad about it,” Slice said. “I got my first black-eye in my life. This man knocked me out in front of my family. That’s f**ked up.” Andre Arlovski was forced to handle Roy Nelson’s size as the 260 plus Nelson held Arlovski’s back against the cage for most of the fight. The oversized (heavyweight) Nelson got a takedown early and went for two kimura submission attempts, but the Russian was able to wait it out until surprisingly the ref stood them up and Arlovski retaliated with a big knee from the clinch. The two spent the rest of the round in that position. The premature stand up would be the object of Nelson’s discontent after the fight. “I thought I had dominant position and I still had the referee telling me I needed to work,” Nelson said.
“In the second round my head wasn’t there. I felt like I was fighting two people. If you want to make it a boxing match, make it a boxing match. It took me out of my game,” said Nelson. Kelly Kobold’s game plan was evident early when she opened up with a straight to set up a takedown on female phenom Gina Carano. Kobold was unsuccessful in getting the Las Vegas native to the mat and the two exchanged shots afterwards. Carano opened up a cut on Kobold’s head and continued to slug it out throughout the first. Carano landed more rights and lefts combined with knees from the clinch, which stunned Kobold, but never stopped her from pushing forward. Kobold continued to look for the takedown, but was picked off by Carano’s straights and uppercuts. Kobold was finally able to take Carano down, although Carano attempted a triangle hold towards the end of the round. The attempt was unsuccessful. Kobold continued to press for the takedown in the third, however Carano’s base was too powerful for the freestyle fighter to penetrate. Carano landed two powerful knees to set up a standing rear naked choke that put Kobold in deep danger, but did not end the fight. Carano countered Kobold throughout the third round and put forward a number of front kicks, as well as a solid roundhouse at the horn. Carano walked away with a unanimous decision triumph. In an all out slugfest, Benji Radach went toe to toe with Murilo Rua in what may be considered the fight of the night. Radach dropped Rua early in the first with a barrage of strikes, although Rua was able to recover and wildly swing back. Both fighters slipped to the mat to Rua’s advantage when he went for a Kimura attempt that Radach easily escaped. Rua then went for two attempts at a heel hook, however Radach escaped only to finish the first round defending Rua’s hammerfists. Radach opened the second round by landing strong rights and uppercuts to the continually stalking Rua. Similar to a scene out of “Rocky” both men landed simultaneous blows and fell to the mat, each stunned and in bad shape. Radach was quicker to recover and went on to land three solid right hands while in Rua’s guard to get the referee stoppage and the TKO (punches) victory. Welterweight Paul Daily defended the takedown early from a shooting EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields. Shields was successful in his second takedown attempt and quickly got the mount. Shields worked the body and head from the mount to nullify the striker’s standup strength. Shields displayed an impressive array of ground and pound until he lost position while attempting an armbar and spent the remaining time defending Daily’s retaliatory ground and pound attack. Shields’ poor skills as a standup fighter were evident as he got the worst end of the exchanges early in round two. He was however, clearly superior on the ground as he was able to drop and get the takedown on a charging Daily. From there, Shields easily transitioned to the mount and repeatedly tried for armbar submissions. Shileds finally found one that stuck when he secured the armbar to get the tap. In her quest to face Gina Carano in a future bout, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos took on the ever tough Yoko Takahashi. Santos delivered massive punishment to drop Takahashi and nearly submit her on two separate occasions with a triangle and an armbar attempt in the first round. It was Santos fight from that point forward, as she fired off punches and kicks that may have stopped a lesser opponent, although maybe an early stoppage would have been better for Takahashi. The third round was more of the same as Santos landed a classic spinning-back fist among other strikes to get the unanimous decision win. Conor Heun got an impressive second round TKO victory over James Edson Berto. Heun’s victory did not come easy however, when he was dropped with a straight right hand and almost caught with a guillotine choke in the first. Heun stood steadfast throughout however, and was able to launch a ground and pound attack at the end of the second to take the round. Heun absorbed a flying knee from a bloodied Berto only to get him to the mat and deliver hammerfists and elbows to provoke a stoppage. Mikey Gomez defeated Lorenzo Borgomeo with an armbar at 4:06 in the second round. After an opening flurry in the first the fight became a battle to see who would win on the ground in which Gomez clearly was superior. David Gomez only lasted 2:03 with Bryan Hamade on Saturday evening. Making his professional MMA debut, Hamade took Gomez down early, although Gomez was able to get to his feet only to have Hamade leap into a guillotine choke that finished Gomez off. Nicolae Cury secured a reverse triangle on Jorge Boechat who tapped
out in under two minutes of the opening round. Boechat was dropped early
with a right hand and was also quickly crippled with a leg kick. The
blow allowed Cury to take Boechat’s back and secure the chokehold that
ended his night. |
