Even though Matt Hamill was born deaf,
it has not stopped him from accomplishing many great things. Hamill
is a three-time NCAA Wrestling Division III National Champion, Silver
medalist in the Deaf Olympics and two time Gold Medalist in the Pan
Am games. In the UFC, Hamill has enjoyed victories over Reese Andy,
Tim Boetsch, Rex Holman, Seth Petruzelli and Jesse Forbes. His only
losses are to Rich Franklin and a controversial split decision to Michael
Bisping. MMA Sports caught up with Hamill as the world continues to
watch him develop as a complete mixed martial artist.
Tony: Congrats Matt on your most recent fight?
Matt: Thank You.
Tony: Was this a great way to bounce back after
your loss with Rich Franklin?
Matt: It's great to get back in the winning column. I've learned from
my mistakes and I’m learning to stay focused better.
Tony: Throughout the whole Reese Andy fight you
were just destroying him with punches. Have you been working a lot on
your stand up?
Matt: I've been working on my standup since I got into MMA. It's the
weakest part of my game.
Tony: With your wrestling background, do you
feel you will always have the upper hand, even as your stand up becomes
more and more deadly?
Matt: I think wrestling is a very important part of the game and it
comes in handy when trying to dictate where the fight goes.
Tony: Right now, where do are you currently training?
Matt: I train in Utica NY. My trainers and I have a private facility
and we are currently building a 4000 square foot building on my property.
Also, Executive Fitness, Bruno Tostes BJJ and Renzo Gracie Academy.
Tony: Who are some of the guys in your camp that
helped you get ready for the Reese Andy fight?
Matt: My trainers, Duff Holmes, Tim "Shrek" Greene, Bruno
Tostes, and guys from my camp: Andy Mejias, Chad Hotailing, Derrick
Coleman, Roger Zapata, Kimdu Bethel, Arutjan Pegoshian, Fahim Ahmad
Zai, Everyone at Bruno BJJ, Renzo Gracie Academy, 518 Grappling and
more.
Tony: Going back to the Mike Bisping fight. Would
you like a rematch?
Matt: I would love a rematch. I can't make 185 and Bisping is smart
to stay there!
Tony: Comparing that fight with your current
fighting skills, Do you feel it would turn out differently if there
were a second fight?
Matt: Absolutely, I'm a whole different fighter now.
Tony: Did you feel you had the fight won once
the 3rd round was over?
Matt: Yes, I thought for sure the ref was going to raise my hand.
Tony: Coming off a dominating performance against
Andy, do you plan on taking some time off? Or is back in the gym for
the next fight?
Matt: Back to the gym. I'm scheduled to fight Mark Munoz at UFC 96 in
my home state of Ohio.
Tony: In your current weight class is there anyone
in you would prefer to fight?
Matt: Anyone in the top ten.
Tony: I recently read there is a movie in the
works about you. Is this true?
Matt: Yes. It is true.
Tony: Can you give a little breakdown of what
the film will be focusing on?
Matt: My early life through my first national championship and the struggle
of being deaf along the way.
Tony: When can we expect this film to be released?
Matt: Filming starts this fall and it should be out in 2010.
Tony: What can we expect to see from Matt Hamill
in 2009?
Matt: You can expect me to improve day by day and fight by fight.
Tony: Are there any last words Matt? Is there
anyone you would like to thank before you head out?
Matt: Thanks to all my family, friends and fans for never giving up
on me.
