EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with LEONARD GARCIA
BAD BOY - Leonard Garcia
By Mike Denny for MMA Sports. Photos by Josh Hedges/WEC Productions, LLC.

Whether it what his fight against Roger Huerta in the UFC or his latest win over Chan Sung Jung at WEC 48, one thing is certain… Leonard Garcia puts on memorable and exciting fights. His leave it all in the cage attitude has earned him many fans for the reason that this all heart fighter says it best, “I’m always gonna come in to throw down”.

Mike: Wow! Congrats on what may go down as one of the most exciting MMA fights to ever take place on live TV. Could you give us your thoughts on how the fight went?
Leonard: It went exactly how I thought it would go, Chan Sung Jung is a straight forward exciting fighter. We both like to throw down, so you got to see two guys just stand and trade for 3 rounds. I’d take fights like that every month if my body could handle it.

Mike: The fight was really close, some people thought The Korean Zombie won, some thought you won. How do you feel about the decision?
Leonard: I’m a fighter, my job is to fight and entertain. I thought we both did that well. I’d have to look at the tape, but I felt like it was a close fight.

Mike: There has already been talks of a rematch, is that something you would be interested in at some point?
Leonard: I think we would both welcome a rematch, I took this one on short notice, so it would be great to get a real camp in place to train for him.

Mike: Let's go back a little bit, could you tell us how you got started in MMA?
Leonard: I was boxing, and some of my training partners started doing it, so I figured I’d give it a try.

Mike: Also how did you get with Greg Jacksons camp?
Leonard: When I accepted the fight with Huerta, in the UFC, I made the trip to Jackson. I’ve been here ever since!

Mike: What's next for you? How long do you think it will take until your hand heals and you will fight again?
Leonard: 5 weeks is all the doctor is saying. I’m not sure what is next, hopefully tough fights to move back in title contention. I’d like to fight as soon as the doc give me the ok.

Mike: Is there anyone at 145 you would like next? Someone you think matches up well with you, or someone you think would be a good fight?
Leonard: I’d really like to fight Jose Aldo in the future, I won’t back up and neither will he. I think it will be a lot like the Chan Sung Jung fight. Exciting!

Mike: You are a balls to the wall type of fighter, always exciting and putting on a great fight. Would you rather lose a close, exciting fight, then to win a boring decision?
Leonard: I’m always gonna come in to throw down, so that makes for an exciting fight. The only way my fights are boring… is if the other guy wants to make it a wrestling match.

Mike: You have had a lot of fights, and a lot of good ones. Do you have a most memorable fight in your career?
Leonard: Obviously my fight with Huerta and my fight with Chan Sung Jung are two of the most memorable, but really I’d have to say Jens Pulver. It was a true honor to fight a legend like Jens. To be able to be in the same cage as him was a true privilege, and my most memorable moment in MMA!

Mike: Going back quick to the last fight one more time. How does it feel to have such a great fight take place on live TV. In what could have been a lot of casual fans first look at the WEC. It has even been compared to Bonnar vs Forrest which was huge for the sport.
Leonard: I knew that we had to be exciting and that pay per view buys were on the line. I took that very seriously. I hope it does have the same impact, that would be an honor to have it looked upon in that way.

Mike: What were your thoughts on Aldo vs Faber?
Leonard: Aldo’s tough, he hammered him with leg kicks. To fight Aldo you have to back him up and pressure him… if he gets off like he did, its gonna be a rough night for anyone.

Mike: If you get a shot at Aldo, how do you feel the two of you match up?
Leonard: I think I’m a guy that would go right after him and we’d have a war. I’m not gonna try to take him down, and neither will he. Id like to think I match up very well.

Mike: Out of all your fights/sparring/training/etc, what would you say is the hardest shot you have ever been hit with?
Leonard: Cowboy… his legs/kicks are lethal.

Mike: And opposite, what's the hardest you have landed?
Leonard: The right hand I landed on Takaya.

Mike: Last one... if they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play the role of Leonard Garcia?
Leonard: Me! Leonard Garcia.

Mike: Thanks so much for your time, can’t wait to see you fight again! Any final words?
Leonard: Thank you, Thanks to Tapout, TapoutSN, MMA Overload, VAS, Heavy Hands and Charmcitymma.com.
