EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with LC Davis

By Mike Denny for MMA Sports

L.C. Davis is undefeated in the WEC and on a three fight winning streak. Working his way to a featherweight title shot, Davis only wants to fight the top of the food chain and breaks it down in his own words, “If I don’t get a title fight… I want a top contender”.

Mike: How’s it going L.C.? First of all, I wanted to say congrats on the big win over Deividas Taurosevicius, could you give us your thoughts on how the fight went?
LC: Thanks! I think the fight ended up being a clinch battle. I think he was desperate to get me down and it didn't work out too good for him. I wish I would've let my hands go a little more and been a little more aggressive, but I was very happy with my takedown defense!

Mike: Could you tell us a little bit about how you got started in MMA?
LC: After I finished my wrestling career at Missouri Valley College, I was just finishing school, and working as student assistant coach. One of my friends on the wrestling team started fighting, and I started training/helping him, and then I got the urge to try it out myself.

Mike: You started your career out with 9 straight wins, when you’re an undefeated fighter like that and picking up a lot of attention in the MMA world, does it add any pressure to you?
LC: Yeah a little pressure did come with being undefeated, especially when most of my fights early on in my career were in my hometown. The pressure of fighting in front of and wanting to win in front of your family and friends, and trying to stay undefeated… some pressure was definitely there!

Mike: Your next fight is against Josh Grispi, what do you think about him as a fighter?
LC: He is young, athletic, very aggressive, and also very big for 145 pounds.

Mike: How do you see this fight going down?
LC: Man, I don't really know how this fight will go down? He is very unpredictable and fights kinda wild and sporadic! I think his aggression will create openings for both him and for me. We'll see who can capitalize on these openings, and that person will win the fight!

Mike: And how do you think the fight will end?
LC: I have no clue but I don't see it going to the judges!

Mike: With a win over Grispi you would be 4-0 in the WEC and probably getting closer to a title shot, is there anyone you would like to face after this fight?
LC: I only want to keep moving forward, so if I don’t get a title fight… I want a top contender next!

Mike: What were your thoughts on the fight between Urijah Faber and Jose Aldo?
LC: I thought it was pretty one-sided after the first round. Aldo looked great and Faber showed lots of heart!!

Mike: How do you feel you would do against the Champ when you get your shot?
LC- (laughs) I don’t know, and there is only one way to find out! Hopefully, I can do better than others have done against him.

Mike: You have been in some really good fights, against some tough dudes, do you have a most memorable fight so far?
LC: My last IFL fight with Rafael Dias, and my affliction fight with Bao Quach.

Mike: You fought in Sengoku, what’s the biggest difference between fighting in the USA and in Japan?
LC: Time zone, the fans, the rules, weight classes (kilo’s vs pounds) are just a few… but a fight is a fight. So although there is a lot of differences… its still really just a fight.

Mike: If they brought a tag team belt to MMA, and you were put in the tournament. Who would you want as your partner at 145?
LC: Duh… Jose Aldo. He's the best right now!!

Mike: You get the chance to play matchmaker. What is the one fight you would like to set up and watch go down, as a fan of the sport?
LC: Main event would be GSP vs Anderson Silva and the co-main event is Chuck Liddell vs Kimbo Slice… you could sell that ppv for $100.

Mike: Varner vs Shalorus who wins?
LC: Shalorus, but I like them both. I have trained with Shalorus and his wrestling, great chin, and heavy hands will give anyone fits!

Mike: Last one, if they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play the character of L.C. Davis?
LC: ME! And if not me… then a great, good looking actor! (laughs).

Mike: Anything you close with?
LC: I wanna thank God first, also all my coaches, training partners, family and friends that helped, and continue to help me! Thanks to my sponsors: Affliction clothing, Revgear, Polanti watches, Jaco clothing, Future Clothing, TCB fight wear.

Mike: Thanks for your time man, and good luck in this next fight!
LC: Thank you, God bless.
