EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with KING MO
Down With The KING - KING MO
By Mike Denny and Tony Leone for MMA Sports. Photos courtesy of WVR

Tony: Congrats on your most recent win over Ryo?
Mo: Thanks man.

Tony: Before heading into this fight, did you think it was gonna last all three rounds?
Mo: Naw... I thought I was gonna get him out before the 3rd. He is a tough fighter though. He has heart and is a true Rocky fan. He was looking for a Rocky comeback.

Tony: Right now your record stands at 4-0-0. Three wins were by way of knockout. Is your goal to be known as a young fighter with knockout power and KO capability?
Mo: I just wanna be known as an exciting fighter that finishes fights and knows how to win.

Tony: Your fights have been with Sengoku. Are there any chances that once your contract comes up for negotiations, you would consider the UFC?
Mo: I'd leave that up to my manager Ryan Parsons. I think the UFC is a great organization, but for now, Sengoku is my home. I’m only 4-0 and I'm still learning about this fight game.

Tony: Right now, who might you consider to be the best pound for pound fighter out there? Since there are many mixed opinions. Some people say Fedor, some say Anderson or GSP. Who do you think that would be, right now, in your opinion?
Mo: I honestly don’t know the answer. You have Lyoto, GSP, Aoki, JZ, Fedor, Anderson, Torres, Kid, Faber... there is a lot of names to be mentioned.

Tony: And to give the new fans a little bit more of a background on you, when did you first start training in MMA?
Mo: I first did serious MMA training in mid August... I played around with it, but nuthin’ too serious until wrestling was done.

Tony: Did MMA come natural to you in the very beginning?
Mo: I think I was born to be a fighter... I love combat... Its fun to fight!!! Luv it mayne!!!

Tony: Where do you currently train at this time?
Mo: Im a gym hopper... you can catch me at Fortune's Gym with Justin Fortune working boxing, Lava Fitness with Melchor Menor working my Muay Thai, Throwdown with Dean Lister and Jocko, Joker's, Tiki's, Babalu's gym, Alberto Crane's Gym... the list goes on. If I’m in Ohio, you can catch at the Buckeye MMA Gym.

Tony: Has there been any fighters out there who have made a major impact on you for the sport? and where you want to be one day?
Mo: Dan Hendo, Matt Lindland, Kevin Jackson, Jeff Lindsey, and my Mama, cuz she struggled and fought to raise us... Byron Tucker, Tim Edwards, and Edwin Lorne.

Tony: And what can we expect to see from the King in 2009?
Mo: All wins and no losses!!! More Queens and more dancing!!!

Mike: For your first pro fight in MMA they put you up against a veteran with a ton of fights in Travis Wiuff… did you feel at all like they might be throwing you to the wolves?
Mo: I don’t know... some people think so, but I knew I could win that fight. He was just too big and slow, he is a good heavyweight fighter... but I was just too fast in that one.

Mike: How did you get the nickname "King Mo"?
Mo: My boy Kami gave that to me, he said "once you do what you gotta do, you'll be a king" and I liked how it sounded... and since then it just stuck.

Mike: What about the elaborate entrance?
Mo: You know, I have been doing that stuff since college. It’s just my personality, its fun to do and I like it. A lot of people thought it was the Japanese organizations and stuff that had me do it, but it was my idea. The umbrella girls, the crown, the rose petals... all of it.

Mike: It’s definitely one of the best entrances in the sport... which leads me to my next question. Mayhem, You and Sakuraba… who’s got the best entrance?
Mo: I think right now… I am in the lead. I don’t know Sakuraba's last one was pretty good... but I think I am in the lead right now. Genki Sudo is the all -time best though. He has the flash and the swagger, but he would come out there and get the wins to go with it.

Mike: Out of everyone you have fought, sparred, trained with etc... who has hit the hardest?
Mo: This is a good question… and believe it or not Benji Radach (I think this is what was said...the phone was cutting out). He's a little guy but he hits hard… and he caught me with some pretty clean shots which doesn’t really happen too often.

Mike: If you could be matchmaker for a day, what is one fight you would love to set up and watch as a fan?
Mo: I have 2 answers for this one. Me vs anyone at Heavyweight, 205… or even 185. And Alistair vs Fedor.

Mike: Alright man, last one. They make a movie about your life, who do you want to play King Mo?
Mo: (laughing) I don’t even know man.... Mike Epps! Nah, well maybe he smiles a lot and is a funny dude… so yeah Mike Epps or Shawn Wayans maybe.

Mike: Sounds good, anything you wanna close with?
Mo: Thanks to everyone for being there and all my fans for the support. Cage Fighter, Light Force Nutrition, Dean Lister, Ryan Parsons, my trainers in Brazil. Dallas Fort Worth… gotta represent Texas and the whole state of Oklahoma.
