Mike: So your next
fight is at UFC 96 against Jason Day…what do you think of Jason as an
opponent?
Grove: He's tough! Day is one of those guys who are no great at any
one thing…but he is good at everything. If I don’t come out correct
in this fight, it could end up being a short night for me.
Mike: How do you think it will go?
Grove: I expect a good fight man. He lost his last fight against Bisping,
and he didn’t really get to show much in that one. He looked really
impressive against Belcher, and that’s the Jason Day that I am expecting
to show up on March 7th. I want to say I will get a spectacular finish,
but I am not a fortune teller… you know? So we will see March 7th who
the better fighter is that night.
Mike: How’s training going for the fight?
Grove: It’s going good so far man. My head is right this time, training
is going good. I just can’t wait to get in there and fight!
Mike: I owe you a congratulations, how’s it feel
to be a dad?
Grove: Thank You. Being a dad is a trip! It’s a new experience and I
just get to see a lot of cool stuff, its hard sometimes but my girlfriend
always helps out. She knows that I need to sleep and everything while
training for a fight. But I love it man, and seeing new things like
watching you eat, or look at you and recognize you and everything. I
love it.
Mike: That’s awesome man, how’s the new gym going
by the way?
Grove: Good...well good and bad. The good is we have got a great response,
and we have a bunch of solid students, we have a lot of talent in here.
And our kids program kicks ass! The bad is we just got going and had
to move. We had a room in like a 24 hr fitness center…and they sold
it, and the guys who bought it didn’t have us in their plans. I kind
of got sucker punched, but its all good. I mean the parents helped us
move, and it’s just been awesome. It gives me that much more motivation
in my fighting. I am representing them every time I fight.
Mike: So what’s the best and worst thing about
being a fighter?
Grove: The best thing is getting to do something I love as a job, and
not have to get up at 5 am and get up on a roof with a tool belt on
in the hot sun all day. The worst is probably the emotional side. For
me it’s just all the fake people that are involved. The business side
and also the fans who love you one minute then the next minute you aint
shit to them. You know? The guys from school who see you in the limelight
and are your best friends and then when you screw up they are like "pshh
I knew it! I knew you were a pussy in 1st grade!!" But it makes
me stronger man, honest to God I love all the bad shit that happened,
cause it made me stronger and it will never happen again!
Mike: Yeah people are quick to turn their back
on fighters in this sport, one loss and you suddenly suck, and should
retire.
Grove: Yeah (laughing) fake people! But like I said, all that makes
you stronger.
Mike: So who has hit you the hardest so far in
your training and fighting.
Grove: I'm not just saying this, but BJ Penn. he's hit me real hard...and
Mike Pyle hits pretty fucking hard to...so does Wanderlei Silva. Those
are the 3 that have hit me the hardest.
Mike: Yeah, I wouldn’t want to get hit by any
of them, that’s for sure...if you could play matchmaker what is one
fight you would love to see?
Grove: Umm...Lyoto Machida vs Rashad Evans. That would be 2 geniuses
of the sport going at it. Aggressive vs. counter attack and it would
be a great fight I think.
Mike: If they made a movie about your life, who
should they get to play Kendall Grove?
Grove: Keanue Reeves!(laughs)
Mike: Well that’s all I got for you man, anything
you wanna close with?
Grove: Thanks to my true fans, that have stuck by me through thick and
through thin...Punsihment Athletics, Cage Fighter, Mickeys Malt Liquor,
BJPENN.COM, and fight4thekids.org which is a organization which benefits
kids who are abused or molested. I have a friend who fights that had
gone through that…and he is a big part of the organization and it’s
for a real good cause. Also thanks to my family, my daughter Chloe Grove
and my girlfriend.
Mike: Alright man thanks; I'll see you in March.
Grove: See you in Ohio. |
