Mike- Lets start
with how you got involved in martial arts and MMA.
Keith- I got started in wrestling and boxing while in High School, and
my wrestling coach introduced me to Zach Light...who is Rampage’s wrestling
coach, and it kind of started there. I started taking jiu-jitsu when
I was like 17 and then had my first fight at 18 in KOTC.
Mike- Your next fight is on February 26 against
Tony Lopez, what do you know about him?
Keith- I Know that he's really awkward! And he wears you down the whole
fight... he will take a beating and be like half knocked out, but continue
to tire you out and get a submission. SO I just need to come in strong
and look for the finish, and not make mistakes.
Mike- How is the training going for the fight?
Keith- It’s going good. I am a full time student and train full time…
so when I am not doing one, I am doing the other. I just try to train
as much as I can. My boxing at LA Boxing, my wrestling, my jiu-jitsu
at Gracie Barra in Irvine.
Mike- Have a prediction for the fight?
Keith- If I don’t knock him out in the first, I will in the second.
haha
Mike- Not too look past your opponent, but is
there anything you want next? Anyone you want to fight in particular?
Keith- Nah, I am just taking it fight by fight… like you said… not wanting
to look past anyone. Tony’s got a weird style, and to watch him fight…
you would think he was shitty... but he has beat some tough guys (Kyle
Kingsberry, Wes Combs, Frank Appah)
Mike- Speaking of "KO" how did you
pick up the nickname "KO KID"?
Keith- My wrestling coaches always called me "kid", and my
first like 3-4 fight I won by KO, including one in 6 seconds… which
is one of the fastest in California. So they started calling me KO Kid
after that and it just kind of stuck.
Mike- You've fought in a few pretty big orgs.
with KOTC, WEC, and SHOWXC was there much of a difference between the
3?
Keith- I think ShoXC seemed the most organized. The WEC and KOTC were
pretty close, but a lot of orgs are kind of unorganized still… it’s
getting better though. But yeah, they all felt pretty much the same...
just some a little more organized then others. Strikeforce is supposed
to be pretty good, and they just bought out EliteXC and have my contract
now I think. So that will be good.
Mike- What’s been your most memorable fight so
far?
Keith- Haha… yeah my most memorable fight would be in Cage Combat, I
fought in the other guys hometown. The first round I was nailing him
pretty good, and he was this Hawaiian guy with a really hard head, haha…
but I did good in the first. Second round, I beat him up some more and
in the 3rd I started to get tired and he got side control on me and
ground and pounded me a little bit. I thought "ok, I have the first
2 and he has 1". The fight went to a split decision for him! Split
decisions suck. I think sometimes you get judges who know boxing and
favor that and others who know wrestling and favor that... you know?
But yeah that’s my most memorable fight. I didn’t think I lost, but
I guess I lost, haha.
Mike- Is there any fighters you looked up to
getting into this sport?
Keith- Vitor Belfort. I won’t say Randy Couture because that’s who everyone
says, so yeah Vitor Belfort. He has that style that I really like and
I got to train with him and he's way cool and will be a beast at 185.
Mike- Out of everyone you have fought/sparred/trained
with etc. who has hit the hardest?
Keith- Who has hit me the hardest?... Probably Rampage. He hit me real
hard, and it wasn’t even in a good spot. He hit me like right in the
forehead and I had a fucking headache for a week!
Mike- If you could play matchmaker for a day,
what’s one fight you would love to set up and watch as a fan?
Keith- Georges St. Pierre vs Anderson Silva and I would have them meet
at 185.
Mike- If they were to make a movie about your
life, who should they get to play Keith Berry?
Keith- Probably the guy who played wolverine, he would be cool... what’s
his name… Hugh Jackman!
Mike- All right man that’s all I've got for ya,
anything you wanna close with?
Keith- Thanks for the interview.
Mike- No problem, thank you and good luck!
Keith- For sure, thanks.
