Mike:
Could you tell us a little about your time at St. Eds, I am from Cleveland…
so I am interested in seeing how you liked it up there?
Gray: St. Edward High School is the perfect school for young men who
really want to excel in sports and academics. It’s an all boys school
and a lot of people might think that sucks, but it really does take
away the distraction of girls during the school day, and allows you
to focus on your sports and doing what it takes to go to college. Almost
everyone goes to college after graduating and the sports programs are
the best in the country. I owe a lot to St. Eds, it shaped me into the
man I am today.
Mike: How did you make the transition from wrestling,
into MMA?
Gray: After I was done with wrestling I moved back home to Las Vegas.
MMA was popular in the area, so I started working out at a jiu-jitsu
gym and then I got the chance to go train with BJ Penn in Hawaii. After
that I decided this was something that I would really like to try.
Mike: Also how did you get hooked up with Extreme
Couture?
Gray: Before Xtreme Couture was around, Randy Couture had a little training
camp that took place at The Ultimate Fighter gym and Xyience Training
Center. At the time it was Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, Mike Pyle,
Jay Hieron, Alex Schoenauer, John Wood and myself. TysonGriffin, Mac
Danzig, John Alessio and others started to come in and eventually moved
out here. There wasn't any classes or anything formal like that, it
was either sink or swim. Everyone shared techniques and training methods,
but for the most part it was just hard sparring everyday. Randy opened
up his gym about 1 1/2 years later. Now it’s a little more formal and
grown to be pretty big, but we still got the same mind set.
Mike: You were on The Ultimate Fighter, looking
back… what do you think the show did for your career?
Gray: It gave me the opportunity to fight for the UFC and a fan base.
Which opened a lot of doors that helped me to keep training and do this
as a full time job.
Mike: The next season’s roster has been announced
with some notable names like Roy Nelson, Wes Sims, Mike Wessel and Kimbo
Slice. Do you have an early prediction on who will win?
Gray: Roy Nelson was one of the guys that trained with us originally
before Xtreme Couture opened. If I had to choose, it would be him. He
was very talented and is a tough guy.
Mike: Your next fight is against Roger Huerta,
how do you think you match up with him?
Gra:- I know I'll be prepared!! That's one thing I'm pretty good at,
getting ready for fights and getting in there to do my job!!
Mike: After this fight Roger Huerta will _______
?
Gray: Probably make movies, have tons of girls and money, and I'll keep
fighting until I'm drooling on myself, can't walk anymore and my girl
has to take care of me. But at least I'll do what I really love!! Haha.
Mike: Ok, so if you win this fight... you have
to be close to a title shot. Who do you think deserves the next title
shot?
Gray: Right now I'm focused on Huerta. Diego Sanchez and Frank Edgar
are a couple names that do pop up in my mind.
Mike: Is there anyone at LW you would like to
face after this fight?
Gray: I just take it one fight at a time. The only guy I want to fight
is the guy I got next.
Mike: If they brought a tag team title to MMA,
and they put you in the LW tournament... who would you choose as your
partner?
Gray: Tyson Griffin.
Mike: Out of everyone you have fought/ sparred/trained
with etc...who has hit the hardest?
Gray: I spar with a lot of boxers and you can tell how technical and
accurate they are. It's more of sting than an actual hurt. But Vitor
Belfort and Wanderlei Silva really have heavy hands and probably given
me some of the hardest punches I've taken.
Mike: Best wrestling in MMA belongs to?
Gray: Randy Couture, he knows all the tricks!!
Mike: If they made a movie about your life, who
should they get to play the role of "The Bully"?
Gray: Danny McBride or Nick Swardson, because it would be a comedy.
