EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with FORREST GRIFFIN
Interviewed by Tone Leone for MMA Sports. Photos by Brian O'Hara, copyright MMA Sports

Tony: The new undisputed light heavy weight champion Forrest Griffin, how does that sound Forrest?
Forrest: It's alright. It's good. I recently got into scientology. That works best for me.

Tony: Going into this fight, who were some of the guys in your training camp?
Forrest: Mike Whitehead, Tim from the show, Wanderlei (Silva), Vitor Belfort, Randy (Couture). The usual suspects.

Tony: Do you feel it's important for a fighter such as yourself to stick with what works in your camp or do you try new things?
Forrest: yeah, I don’t know.

Tony: ...lol

Forrest: I'm pretty much a clean slate. We work at many things and see what happens from there.

Tony: What's your training schedule like?
Forrest: Swimming. I like swimming, it's pretty tough. And I do that Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The swimming helps because my shoulders are getting a little banged up so the swimming is good. During the week, I also meet with my strength coach.

Tony: Throughout the Rampage fight you were killing him with leg kicks. Was that part of your game plan, or did you capitalize on it as the fight progressed?
Forrest: Leg kicks is something I work on. It seemed to work, so I did them a lot that night. I have noticed one thing. Sometimes, as I throw legs kicks, I kind of put my hands down, which makes me real susceptible for an over hand right.

Tony: Rampage had mentioned at the post fight conference he would like the rematch. Do you want a rematch right away or would you like to fight someone else first?
Forrest: I wouldn’t mind getting a fight with someone else but at the same time, a rematch is a fight, you know.

Tony: Anderson Silva is now in the light heavy weight division, would you like to touch gloves with him in the near future?
Forrest: Oh yeah, of course. He's the best of the best of the best.

Tony: Do you think that now you are the champ, people will stop considering you the underdog?
Forrest: No I actually don't. You know, to a lot of guys out there I'm going to fight, I'm still gonna be the underdog.

Tony: Do you think that a fighter should be professional and humble whenever he's out in the public’s eye?
Forrest: I think people should be whoever they are. Whatever they wanna do. If you're an arrogant lawyer then you're an arrogant lawyer. Sometimes people just feel they're good at things and they don't mind telling you about it, so there's nothing wrong with that.

Tony: You did an episode of Law & Order. What was that experience like?
Forrest: It was alright. Acting is not the most fun thing in the world. A lot of sitting around.

Tony: So films are not for you like Randy Couture or Tito Ortiz?
Forrest: Nah, I don't have a passion for it.

Tony: Going back to fighting for a minute. When you come out for a fight and you are in front of a crowd of 15,000 people live, do you still get the jitters?
Forrest: I felt pretty relaxed this last fight. And actually these last two fights I was okay. Every fight is its own experience. I just pretty much take it how it is that day. It also has a lot to do, for me, with how my training camp went and how healthy I feel.

Tony: Aside from fighting, training and promoting fights. What are some things you do for an escape?
Forrest: I like to watch movies.

Tony: Has your family always been very supportive of you with your fighting?
Forrest: Oh yeah. They're really supportive of me. Anything that makes me happy, they're happy for me. My mother actually was more supportive of me before she actually saw me get hit in the head. Then she was like, "Nah, I don’t know if you need to be doing that."

Tony: Was there ever a point in your career where you wanted to stop fighting?
Forrest: Yea. In fact, I did quit. Thirteen months before the show, I broke my arm and it was just too much. I had quit my job and I had made the sacrifices and I hadn't reaped any of the rewards at that point. And I never got that break; I never got that shot to fight in the UFC. So, I talked to Joe Silva on the phone and he basically said "don't lose fights so we can use you in February." Well, come November I broke my arm, so obviously I couldn't fight in February. At that point, I was pretty much broke. So I went back to working. I moved back home and I started working law enforcement until I got the call for the show.

Tony: For all the young amateur fighters and fans in this sport who look up to athletes and see them as hero’s, in your honest opinion, who are the real hero’s in your mind?
Forrest: The soldiers who go over seas and fight for our country. That's a pretty terrifying thing. Fighting in front of however many people is not that scary. You're not gonna die and it’s not that big of a deal. The risk ratio for my job is a little bit easier.

Tony: Have you gotten the opportunity to visit the soldiers over in Iraq?
Forrest: No, I haven’t gotten to go to Iraq yet. I was supposed to go after this last fight but my Father past away so I had to go to his funeral the next week. He passed away three weeks before the fight, so they moved the funeral the next week after my fight. The point is I was supposed to go to Iraq for a couple of weeks, but that didn't turn out. I have had the chance to do some cool things though. A buddy of mine is actually stationed in Guam so I’m trying to set up something to go and see him.

Tony: I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Tony: Before you head out, Forrest, was there anything you wanted to say to all your fans?
Forrest: Oh yeah. I would like to thank all my fans out there and my training partners for all their support.

Tony: The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear?
Tony: “Rampage” Jackson / Forrest: Explosive.
Tony: Lyoto Machida / Forrest: Elusive.
Tony: Chuck Liddell / Forrest: Power.
Tony: Anderson Silva / Forrest: Reaction speed.
Tony: Tito Ortiz / Forrest: Strength.
Tony: Thiago Silva / Forrest: Overall striking.
Tony: “Shogun” Rua / Forrest: Injured.
Tony: Rameau Sokoudjou / Forrest: Wow, just wow, he kicks really hard.
Tony: Wanderlei Silva / Forrest: He's the most vicious guy in the game, he's pretty awesome.
