FABRICIO WERDUM EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
By Tony Leone for MMA Sports. Photo by Josh Hedges, courtesy of Zuffa, LLC.

Tony: First off, I would like to thank you Fabricio for doing this interview with me?
Werdum: thank you.

Tony: How have you been since your last fight with Vera?
Werdum: Good. Training hard, concentrating on my next fight.

Tony: For an athlete such as yourself, what do you do right after a fight, do you take time off?
Werdum: Right after the fight, I will spend time with my wife and child, just wind down. But not for long though, it's important to stay sharp at this level of MMA.

Tony: Going back to the Vera fight, do you feel the stoppage was justified and called right?
Werdum: The fight was over once I had full mount.

Tony: Would you take the re-match with Brandon if the fight was presented to you next year?
Werdum: I feel I have nothing to prove or gain in a rematch. I am only interested in going forward.

Tony: For the readers of MMA who might not know your background in jiu-jitsu, when did you first start training jiu-jitsu?
Werdum: I started when I was a teenager, I was always fighting as a kid. So it was a good way to channel my energy and keep me out of trouble.

Tony: Did jiu-jitsu come easy to you in the beginning?
Werdum: Yes, it didn't take me to long to get to the top.

Tony: What did you love and still love about jiu-jitsu to this day?
Werdum: It is hard to explain, but when I fight I am free of everything, in the zone.

Tony: For a fighter such as yourself, what's your training schedule like before a fight?
Werdum: I train all week with Sunday off. I train in Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling.

Tony: And before you come out to a fight, what are some of the things you do?
Werdum: I stretch, spar and I try to visualize how I am going to win.

Tony: Is there any fighter out there from your previous fights whom you would love to get a rematch with?
Werdum: I feel I didn't do myself justice in the Arloski fight, it was my first time in the octagon. I think the outcome might be different if we fought now.

Tony: Aside from training, what do you do to get away from everything?
Werdum: Because MMA takes up so much of my time, spending time with family and friends is all the relaxation I need.

Tony: Is teaching something you enjoying doing?
Werdum: Yes, it is important to pass on what you have learned.

Tony: What can we expect to see in 2009 with Fabricio?
Werdum: A new UFC heavyweight champion, if the UFC keeps their word and I get my shot at the title.

Tony: Any last words before you head out?
Werdum: Just to all my fans, thank you all.
