Mike- The cliche'
opener, How did you get started in Martial Arts?
Denis Kang- I have been a martial arts fan as long as I can remember.
When I was 18 I rented a video of UFC 2 and I was hooked right away.
I thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Mike- And how did you transition from Martial
Arts into MMA?
Kang- Well the closest thing I could find in my area was a Hapkido hybrid
style that emphasized groundwork. I then moved to BJJ with Marcus Soares.
Mike- You've had over 40 fights so far in your
career, which one is most memorable to you?
Kang- I think my second fight with (Andrei) Semenov, or when I fought
(Kazuo) Misaki in the finals of the Pride GP. Even though I lost that
last one it really taught me a lot.
Mike- You just had an impressive win over UFC
veteran Marvin Eastman, could you give us your thoughts on that fight?
Kang- Well I caught him with a really solid shot right off the bat.
I think he was expecting me to take him down, so he was ready to sprawl
when he should have been keeping his hands up.
Mike- And you also participated in the Dream
MWGP earlier this year, could you give us your thoughts on that?
Kang- That period was a bit of a blur. I was a little burnt out, and
needed to re-focus.
Mike- Where are you training now?
Kang- I'm currently training in Montreal.
Mike- Your next fight will be with the UFC, how
did that come about?
Kang- We'd negotiated with the UFC a few times, but this felt like the
right moment. I'm very happy with it.
Mike- Your opponent will be Alan Belcher, what
do you know about him?
Kang- I don’t know much actually. Just that he's got a Muay Thai background
but he can also grapple.
Mike- How do you think this fight will go, do
you have a prediction?
Kang- I think his standup style matches up well with mine. We will have
a war.
Mike- Not to look past this fight at all, but
being in a new org. with a lot of fighters, is there anyone in particular
you would like to face next?
Kang- I want to move up and become the champion.
Mike- On the same card as you, Dan Henderson
will be fighting Rich Franklin, which depending on what weight class
they stay at…could come into play with you in the future. Who do you
think wins this one?
Kang-Franklin's a tough guy to fight because of his southpaw style,
but Hendo has that monster right hand and the tenacity to back it up.
Franklin can win if he uses his reach and footwork, but if Hendo can
crowd him, and take him down, then he's got it.
Mike- Favorite Movie?
Kang- Conan the Barbarian!!!
Mike- Favorite Cheat Food?
Kang- Haagen Daz.
Mike- Who hits the hardest (that you have fought/trained
with/sparred…etc.)
Kang- Adonis Stephenson (pro boxer from Montreal), Wilson Gouveia and
Chris Franco.
Mike- If you were matchmaker for a day, what
is one fight that you would love to set up and watch. (any organization/any
weight class…no restrictions)
Kang- Rickson Gracie vs Sakuraba.
Mike- If they were to make a movie about you,
who would they get to play Denis Kang?
Kang- Definitely. Will Ferrell.
Mike- That’s all I've got for you man, good
luck!
Kang- Thanks. And good questions!
Mike- Thank you. |
