BJ Penn certainly needs know introduction
being only one of two fighters to ever hold UFC titles in different
weight divisions. He has defeated a who's who of MMA as he prepares
to face Jon Fitch in the main event at UFC 127.
MMA SPORTS: Congratulations on your latest win
against Matt Hughes what are your thoughts on the fight?
BJ: I’m just glad that everything went well. I had a tough year earlier
in the year, I dropped two fights, but at the end of the day I’m just
happy how it all worked out with me and Matt. What can I say I don’t
want to sit here and say this and that, or I knew Matt was going to
do this or I was going to set him up, I’ve got to much respect for Matt
to bad mouth him in any way, a fights a fight, I just count my blessings
and glad that wasn’t me.
MMA SPORTS: 21 second knockout did you think
the fight would end that quick?
BJ: No, I was prepared to get stitches, I was prepared for a war. You
never know, you go out there and you prepare for something like a war
and then good things happen.
MMA SPORTS: What where your thoughts when you
got the call to fight Jon Fitch in Australia?
BJ: I was like “now that’s a test for me in the welterweight division,
fighting’s your life BJ and opportunity to like Fitch now that’s a test.”
MMA SPORTS: What are your thoughts on the fight?
BJ: I know his under pressure people telling him that he has to finish
fights and stuff but I honestly think he’s just going to come out and
do the some thing he always does, he’s a grinder and he goes after you
and grind you into the ground and I just have to stop all that and turn
it around.
MMA SPORTS: So who should I lay my bet on? I
just spoke to Jon Fitch who told me to put my bet on him?
BJ: Well me and Jon Fitch are in two different places in our lives.
All these fighters are really, really, really concerned about one thing,
winning, and it’s not that I’m not concerned about that, but I’ve been
in their shoes for a long time that’s all I was concerned about too,
but more concerned then
winning I want to show everybody my fighting spirit, what happens when
I step into the ring, it’s either going to be the best win, best loss
or best draw you every f#^?ing saw. (Laughs). I’ve stepped into that
ring. It’s just that everybody’s in different places in their lives,
he’s looking for title shot, George is looking for a title shot, all
these people are looking to come up, some people looking to win to keep
their job and this and that, I’m just looking to show my fighting spirit.
MMA SPORTS: Are we going to see you in the lightweight
division or are we going to see you constantly in the welterweight division,
you keep going up and down, you can fight both everybody knows that,
but where do you feel most comfortable at?
BJ: Honestly, I don’t mind 170 too bad because I can eat, I don’t have
to cut all the water, I don’t think it’s good to cut all the water.
What’s that going to do to your brain, cutting all that water and then
you go into there and get punched real hard, then what’s going to happen,
your going to fall down. So I think 170 is going to work out fine.
MMA SPORTS: GSP another dominating performance
against Koscheck, do you see yourself fighting him again?
BJ: You never know, me and him could end up fighting again but like
I said it’s not about that for me, everything is title hunt, title hunt
for everybody, I’d take the title I’d take a title shot of course, but
I feel it’s not about the material thing anymore, it’s not just about
the belt for me it’s just about fighting my best fight, win or lose.
MMA SPORTS: You’ve got lightweight title, you’ve
had the welterweight title, you’ve proved a lot of things, you’ve beaten
the who’s who of mixed martial arts, what do you still need to prove
to yourself?
BJ: I don’t even think I’m proving anything to myself anymore; I just
want to uplift some of the new mixed martial artists, I want to show
them that this is how you do it. This is how you do it when you step
in there, and kids from my town where I live and I really want to show
them that where there’s a will there’s a way. If you want to get in,
just get the job done and if you want to do it, you can do it.
MMA SPORTS: When do you start your training camp
for this fight?
BJ: Well I never stopped on my training camp this whole time, I trained
right through and that’s how I like to train. I use to take two months
off and then go two months on, 6 days a week, this and that, now I just
keep going, make sure I get proper rest, and if it’s just 3 or 4 days
of training of that week, I just keep going year round and never stop.
MMA SPORTS: So when your faced with your opponent
what goes through your head?
Fitch: Depends on the night. I don’t care what happens right now, watch
what your face looks like after this, you’re gonna lose buddy (Laughs).
MMA SPORTS: (Laughs). Is it your face or your
opponents face?
BJ: My opponents face. I’m sure I would be busted up to, but he ain’t
going to feel like he won, I will tell you that right now.
MMA SPORTS: (Laughs). So what does BJ do when
he’s not fighting or training?
BJ: Spending time with my daughter, I don’t do much just hang at home
at the house, go surf a little bit, just hang around, go to the beaches
at Hilo, I don’t do much.
MMA SPORTS: How do you find Australia?
BJ: I love Australia. This is fun. It’s like Hawaii or something. It’s
really nice, everybody’s cool and no body’s rude, I’m really enjoying
myself.
MMA SPORTS: Is this your first time here?
BJ: Yes my first time.
